Help with silver ear jackets

I just finished setting some stones in a set of sterling silver
ear jackets and found out that the hole for the earring post is
to small. Is there an easy way to enlarge the hole. I do not,
and have never done any metal working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,

There are a number of ways to do this. Which way you select
depends on t he tools you have & your experience.

  1. Enlarge the hole with an appropriately sized drill bit. The
drill bit can be mounted in a power tool or pin vise for drilling
    manually.

  2. Enlarge the hole with a tappered reamer. They’re available
from jewele rs suppliers in sets of 5 or 6 for about $12.00.

  3. Twist a scibe or heavy needle in the hole until the correct
    size is reached.

I’ve used all 3 techniques to enlarge holes at one time or
another, it ju st depends on the circumstances.

richard if you don’t have any jewelry tools then try a straight
pin in the hole and wallo it out some. if you want you could go
to the hardware store and purchase a drill bit a little larger
than the posts. or take the jackets to a jeweler and ask if
he/she could drill them for you. It would take 1 minute and the
probably would not charge you. hope this helps michael mathews

If you have a round needle file you could just file the hole a
bit to enlarge it . . . another option would be to drill a larger
hole.
