Gold casting into platinum?

Hi All,

In looking through the Platinum Guild Book of designers Edition
III and a few other publications I’ve come across pieces in which
it appears that 24K gold has been inlayed into Platinum. Steven
Kretchmer makes beautiful examples of what I’m trying to
describe…The 24 Karat gold has a sort of crystalline look
almost as if the gold crystals were allowed to cool slowly and
grow large and then the surface depleated. My questions …Is the
24 Karat cast into the Platinum ? If not how does it get there?
After the 24 Karat is in place how do you create the crystalline
look on the surface? If you do allow the gold to cool slowly to
get the crystals to grow (my guess) how slow is slow and what is
the temperature scale?? I’m sorry about the rambling, I’m tired,
and I’ve spent all day practing pave setting 1pt. stones… I
hope I’m getting better or I’m going to loose my mind…
Thank You !! Ava

P.S. On the purple gold, I’ve heard that the working
characteristics depend on the kind of aluminum alloy you use. I
don’t know which alloys work and don’t work, but you might look
into it…if you find one that works well, please let me know…

Hi Ava, don’t know the answer to your question (althgough
platinum casts so high compared with gold you would have to play
with things to make a bimateal casting work-your big crystal
description however is consistent with slow coooling)

But Keum-boo applicaton of gold works onto platinum and very
well onto palladiaum (cheaper than, nicer than platinum) See the
Keum-boo article on the Tips page for more info. Charles
