Gold burnished on silver

Just got the new Lapidary Journal today and there is a brooch of
fine silver with gold burnished onto it. How does one do that?

Hi Dave. I was curious about that as well. My teacher told me
it was the Kumboo method (described very well in McCreight’s
Metal Technic book). Basically, base piece is heated over low
heat (say on an electric stove top or hot plate). 24K gold foil
is cut into shape desired and applied to piece with a wet brush.
Piece is heated more, then gold is burnished onto piece with a
burnisher. Just bought the gold foil at Metalifferous but
haven’t tried it yet. Take a look at the book chapter though
for the exact details.

Enjoy, rd

Thanks RD, I do have that book and will check it out…Dave

Hi Dave,

this is a Korean techique called Kum Boo(sp) and is very easy to
do.It uses 24K foil or slightly heavier if you are rolling down
your own. It is done on fine silver or sterling that has a fine
silver coat. The silver is heated on the coil of a hot plate or
by torch but not hot enough to change color.it must be very
clean as if you were going to enamel. The foil is laid in place
and burnished with a burnisher. It will easily fuse in place.
This is the simple version but there isn’t a lot more to it than
this. Wire brush with soap and water, do not buff.

Thank you for asking that question, I’ve often wondered about
that process . . .
