GIA Duplex II Refractometer

I just acquired a Refractometer, but it has scratches where you
would place the gem. Is there a way of having this replaced? Also,
I’m in need of the fluid for testing, I checked the GIA website, I
didn’t have any luck with replacements. I’ve not had any formal
training on how to use this device, I only have reference material
so my technical knowledge is limited.

You have to send your refractometer to the GIA (if it is a Gem
Instruments refractometer) and they will replace it for you. You
must however call them first to ask for a return number or they seem
to have problems dealing with the issue. They also sell the RI
liquid there.

the hemisphere can be repolished. Don’t know if GIA does it but a
lapidary can

Terri, The Refractometer glass can be replaced and the liquid for
refractive index is available. I have a friend who builds
refractometers for a living. I will ask him for the model you have
mentioned. You have my number call me. Kenneth Singh

Terri I was surprised at the cost of the Hemisphere. I was told that
the cost of the glass Hemisphere itself is about $85.00 but it is
not easy to install because you need to calibrate & that it would
cost around $225.00. I beleive the new one cost around $450.00. He
said if the scrath is not so bad and you can see around it you need
not change. I would write to GIA before I try elsewhere. The cost of
the refractive Index liquid is about $50.00. I hope this helped you.

Wow! Thank you so much for the I will give GIA a call
next week to see what they say. The scratches are pretty deep on
this one. I know a lady that does gem identification at our local
InterGem show, perhaps I’ll have her take a look before I get too
deep into expense. If she says it needs replaced, I’ll check out
eBay, I’ve seen them sold there for around $200 used.

Thanks again for all your help.
