Gemstone storage and labeling system

Does anyone know a company (web-site of a company) that offers a
range of cabinets or a system for storing and efficiently
labeling faceted (mostly) and rough gem materials of various
sizes.

I would be greatful for any leads.

NIck, my inventory software allows for the printing of labels. I
apply the labels on the parcel papers. Let me know if you want to
take a look at the application. Rob

Hello Nick! I don’t know of a particular company that does but
two thoughts occur to me. One is to use a database system such as
Microsoft Access to produce a database of the gems and assign an
id number to each which could be printed on a folder style label
that fits on the small round storage boxes. The other is to use
one of the more capable labeling programs such as My Advanced
Labelmaker from Mysoftware to produce small labels that could be
put on the boxes. There are several jewelry store inventory
systems that have been mentioned in the past but their names
escape me at the moment. Ed Ward Ward’s Stone Creations

Hi Nick,

For faceted gems, I like to use gem trays. (Flat, rectangular
trays with a foam insert holding small round plastic jars.) For
rough I use plastic compartmental jewelry tray inserts. Both are
available from a variety of sources. I get mine from Thunderbird
Supply:

Hope this helps,

Fine for rough, but less than ideal for faceted stones. Many
stones can chip one another (especially along the girdle) when
stored together in a loose bunch, as they would be either in
parts bins or stone papers.

Try MSC Industrial Supply, 800-645-7270. They also have local
branches in

over 40 cities in the US. Their catalog lists many self standing
& small parts cabinets with various sized drawers with fixed &/or
movable partitions.

Your Yellow pages may list other industrial suppliers that have
the same or similar storage equipment. Lyons is 1 of the major
mfgrs of this type of equipment.

To everyone that replied to this question.

Thank you all for your range of ideas. It is great to be able to
put forward a topic or question and wait for all the various
replies to come back. This forum is very educational !!
