Subject: How much IS gold polishing sweep worth?

Can anyone tell me about how much pure gold is in 1 pound of
polishing sweep? The polishing sweep would be only polishing
sweep (no trash) and would consist of about 90% karat gold and
the balance in silver. I ask because I KRINGE when I get $80 per
pound for it from the refiner (he comes to the store and buys it
by the pound on the spot). I bet it has AT LEAST 2 ounces of 24k
in it after it is refined.

Thanks,

Why not pay for the gold extraction… then the pure is yours?? … Most
places …
your option???

You should send me a present for the I am going to give you
now.Anyone who
sells or sends to the refinary their precious metal scrap in it’s original
form is wearing a sign saying “rob me” If you approach a refinary in a
professional manner,they
will treat you professionaly. You take your scrap, melt it into a homogonous
bar.Then
drill 3 holes on the bottom.Save the filings that come out of the hole.Send
the bar to the refinary with complete confidence. When then recieve it in
this manner, they assume you are professional, who has sent 3 samples for
assay. The mear fact that it appears you have done this is enough. They won’t
mess with you, they will steal a different car,in their business almost
everyone leaves the keys in.
If you suspect, even with this preperation your refiner is stealing.Send
the samples to 3 different assayers. Then you have the proof of it.
Also, you are entitled to be paid for what silver and Platinum is present
in your gold.A good refiner will pay you all. Most don’t tell you it
exists. And I tell you something else, save everything in the work area. All
the crud that comes off the polishing wheels, even your ceiling tiles after
many years will be a nice bonus.Put a trap in your sink. There’s more, but
this will begin your thought process.
Thank you Mark.

My experience is that average polishing sweeps contain 1/4 oz fine gold
per pound, although mine sometimes contain as high as 1/3 oz per pound.
This of course depends on whether you do any grinding at the polishing
machine, and how much brush work, and the average karat you work with. I
work mainly in 18k.

I suggest that you boil your polishing sweeps down in a solution of PURE
LYE in water. For 1 pound of sweeps, use about 4 oz of lye, you may need
to do it twice. then rinse by letting the product stand it water until
the water goes clear. You can then torch melt the product and get all of
your gold into an ingot. NOTE: use a glass or stainless pot, NOT
ALUMINUM, and use adequate ventilation. We upped our returns over 30% by
sending gold ingots to the refiner… make your own conclusions…

Personally, I work mostly alone. I've found that I do pretty well by

melting my own benck sweeps and sometimes refining it myself, but polishing
waste is another matter. I really don’t want to mess with it. I bag it up
and send them out. It includes floor sweeps and things like sandpaper.
Somepeople try to recover every last bit of gold. I’m a little more
discriminatory as I don’t save stuff like paper that has fallen on the floor
and been stepped on or old end brushes that don’t even have bristles. It’s
too easy to waste space and there are charges for refining. I usually send
this stuff out once a year and recover about 4 ounces. I worked at a place a
few years ago that arived at a number of 1% for polishing waste.
