Findings

Hi everyone,

I’ve made costume jewelry for several years, using gemstone chips, as well
as other materials. My husband is a hobbyist silversmith who purchases
cabachons, etc. for the pieces he makes. I hope that is enough to qualify
me to ask questions on this list.

For the past two-three years, I’ve been writing about jewelry as well as
making it. My articles have appeared in Jewelry Crafts magazine and Fire
Mountain Gems’ wholesale catalog.

I am seeking about findings, both for my jewelry making and for
an article that I would like to write. I would like to know the answers to
questions like: What are hypoallergenic earwires made from and what is
surgical steel? I would like enough about findings to be able
to explain all about them to people who make jewelry. (and to my customers
who ask me questions.)

I wrote to the Jewelry Findings Association and to Cobb Company (I was told
they were a findings making company) requesting Neither
replied to my request. I also obtained a brochure title that the Public
Reference Office of the Federal Trade Commission had available at one time
that might cover findings. I wrote to them, and got back a reply that they
were out of the brochures. I have accessed the FTC web page, but couldn’t
find any brochures that could be downloaded.

I would really appreciate any suggestions that anyone has as to where else I
could find any about findings.

Thanks in advance,

Sandra

Absolutely-this is a free for all state. Participation counts.

Niobium, fine gold and fine silver cause no body reactions as does
‘surgical steel’. Not sure whats in it but might include chromium and
vanadium. Try medical/surgical implant web sites?

I wrote to the Jewelry Findings Association and to Cobb Company (I was told

Try the ‘Society of American Silversmiths’ site and ask for info from
Jeffrey Herman.

ps: tell us about the Yuma symposium…

best wishes

Charles

Dear Sandra:

Try and contact Irini Stavridou from Greece, a dealer in hypoallergic jewelry.
