Exhibit insurance and security recommendations

I would like to pose a question to the organization for suggestions
on obtaining insurance (and other protective measures) for a gallery
exhibit. I am in an exhibit at public venue that is not monitored
although my work will be in a locked case. Do other artists
typically purchase insurance for this type of event? Are there any
recommended carriers that members have found to be reasonably priced
and reliable? Are there other suggestions that are used by
metalsmiths to secure their work?

All responses are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Mary

Hello Mary,

If you have business insurance, your policy may cover your work
off-premises. It’s really up to the gallery to provide full
insurance coverage for work on display.

Mary - I carry Jewelers Mutual Insurance and I would be covered at
such an event especially since the cases are locked. I would do a
through inventory with photos and email that to my rep with start and
end dates for the items on display. My insurance is a ‘Craftsmens’
policy because I do not have a store front. My shop is in my home. My
art shows are covered, a consignment show would be covered, my
shop/supplies/jewelry at home covered, mail is insured… I had to
buy a TL15 safe for this coverage and from my understanding that is
standard. The cost varies greatly according to your inventory and
situation, show schedule, etc. Mine is roughly 100$ a month.I love
the safe. It has given me peace of mind when I am gone on a trip. If
anyone is looking for a safe or vault I have a guy near me
(Wisconsin) that is great. He restores old safes/vaults and then
installs them at your residence or store. I believe he travels all
over the place since he was discussing installing an antique vault
door in a home in Florida. If anyone would like his contact
please contact me at my regular email: joykruse at yahoo

this but it was necessary. My business was getting too big to take
risks. Have an awesome day
