Electrocleaning lectropolishing recipes

I have spent some time searching the web and newsgroups for recipes
for electrocleaning / electropolishing solutions. All I find seems to
be oriented towards iron and steel (read: remove rust) but nothing so
far for gold and silver.

I am aware of the commercial products, but I trust there is
effective replacement possible.

Not much about electrocleaning, even lesser about electropolishing,
