I am designing these earrings and the loop for connecting the ear wire is way off. Can anyone give dimension recommendations for the inner and outer diameter for the loop connecting the earring to the ear wire?
Hi,
questions:
what size/ gauge wire are you using for:
-the ear wire diameter
20 gauge? (approx 0.812mm)
19 gauge? (approx 0.912mm)
(i personally prefer 19 gauge for sterling silver, and 20 gauge for gold…others may have different suggestions)
see below article discussing ear wire sizes
- the jumpring wire diameter?
inside diameter or the jumpring needs to accommodate the ear wire diameter, plus extra space so that it doesnt “lock up” and can move freely.
the wire diameter needs to be sturdy, durable, and suitable for the design and ear wire diameter
example- hypothetically speaking…
ear wire diameter is 19 gauge (.912mm)
jumpring inside diameter is (1.20 mm)
jumpring wire diameter is 19 gauge (.912mm)
therefore outside jumpring diameter would be
.912 + 1.2 + .912 = 3.0mm (give or take…)
(could make it a little bigger…)

I think that your problem is that the size of the ring is too large for the rest of the piece. I use 16 and 18 gauge wire wrapped around a 2.5 mm steel mandrel. Small earrings get 18 gauge, larger earrings and pendants get 16 gauge. Once in a while I will do 20 gauge…Rob
This is great Julie and Rob, thank you so much.
