Draw plate dies

Does anyone know what tool steel allow would be good for making
ones own wire and tubing dies. Vince LaRochelle, Eugene, OR.

Try any good tool steel. one great source is your old dull
files. Or get new cheap chinese made ones and grind off the file
teeth. These are cheap files, but the steel is a good high
carbon steel. Just what you need.

G’day; I’ve used ordinary mild steel and then case hardened it.
I have also used annealed truck spring and then hardened and
tempered it. But like Alan said - if you are a jeweller, then
don’t waste your time - buy one. I didn’t because a) I do it
for pleasure and b) I as retired when I did it. Cheers,
