[Digest] for 585?

The ring is stamped "585". It is some carat of gold but I
suspect it is low as there is some amount of tarnish. Does anyone
know what this stamp signifies?

Hi , the stamp would indicate the amount of gold in the ring, your
fathers ring is 14K Gold or 58.5% gold, this number almost always
indicates the amount of gold in the ring, in Europe a lot of older
rings were marked 9K which some people would choose to frown upon
and others would look at it as a way of telling where a nice old
ring came from and consider it advantages. You can find this
of the percentages of Gold in coin books and some
jewlery cataglogues. Chris http://www.tace.com/glitters
