Dark stain on gold?

Dear Orchidians In one ring I made a few months ago… A very strange,
and disturbingly mysterious dark ‘pach’, keeps re-appearing at a
small area on the gold surface…! It is to me a phenomena I never
encountered before? The piece is a 20k rose gold ring. with Opal and
diamonds, and because of the Opal, I have not tried to clean the
stain in the Ultrasonic. yet It come off with a rotary brush and
plain spit. And… When the lady who bought the ring, ware it, the
stain is beck within a day or two. Now [after it came back for
cleaning for the forth time.] I kept the ring in the studio, and the
stain hasn’t come back… yet! [ 4 days] my guess here is that while
its being worn, the heat, activate the…? mysterious black thing,
But I have no idea where it may be oozing from… I’ve been digging
in to the gold looking for a pore or hidden pit, but under a 50x!
microscope I can find no clue. there is a seam, just next to that
area, where the bezel is soldered to the body of the ring. yet the
seam looks perfect.

Please… any ideas,is there any thing I could try to do…? has
any one ever equator a similar problem? The lady is leaving in a
week. I must solve this one… Love & Light. akash

Is the client wearing another ring next to this ring? Could the
stain actually be coming from the other ring?

Hello , I have seen similar stains from time to time . Do you
alloy your own metal ? you may not have a homogenous mix. possble
solution would be to gold plate over area . Secondly solder may
"stain" an area adjacent to its use , something in the solders alloy
reacts to enviromental chemicals in a different manner than the base
metal , you may not be able to see this in a polished piece , I
suggest re-sanding the area , to get through the contaminated area
and then polishing again , its done the trick for me in the past .
