Does anyone know what material is used for creating a custom mold
for a necklace to fit perfectly in a gift box? I need a memory foam
type material that holds its shape when the necklace is not in it’s
box. I am thinking of material similar to jet set but lighter in
weight?
Annie-That must be a really lovely and special necklace to need a
custom box.
The box in the photos was made by my friend Soren Clark. I made the
catch and insides. Uh oh yeah, and the tomato too.
I made the insides of my box with some Styrofoam chunks that were
used for shipping something else. I carved the seat for the tomato
with wax burs and a scalpel. I then covered with silk. I used a
traditional hat blocking steam technique to get the silk to conform
to the seat of the tomato in the styrofoam. I covered the damp
steamed fabric with plastic wrap and placed the piece in the
indentation over night to dry into shape.
Send me photos of your piece and it’s box when you’re done. Have fun
and make lots of jewelry.
Don’t have much experience in making gift boxes, however I conceder
myself handy. Im sure you will find what you are looking for in craft
stores in the flower arrangement section. Like hard shapeable foam.
