Crocheting wire

crochet fine silver wire jewelry

Pat - you could be the saviour of my sanity! I’ve been trying
to crochet with wire, practicing on copper and small pieces of
silver but it’s not looking or feeling right. weaving is going
ok. Do you have any recommendations for the wire? Have tried 26
& 28 ga., should I try to anneal first, or…? Thanks for any
help - (and you’re not the only one into beading, I love pearls
and stone beads, am getting interested in trying to make
lampworked beads) - Kat

I crochet niobium - see Bead and Button June issue - I have
used silver too- I used fine silver 26 and 28 g and use 30
silver for beading wire… all fine silver so there is no problem
with annealing… Done a number of pieces with #14 seed beads I
also have done some lampworking… Lots of fun. But continue to
return to the metal - love fabrication and casting… If there
is any way I can help, just let me know. Joan

Kat–you may have gotten this info already–I’ve been away for a
few weeks and haven’t yet looked at all the mail. But the last
issue of Lapidary has a complete “recipe” for crocheting fine
silver. I believe they recommend 30 ga. wire. It got me so
interested I’ve started practicing with yarn just to be sure I
know the stithces etc. Hope this helps. Sandra/ElegantBee

wow, you guys don’t know how happy this makes me feel! what a
support system here…when i designed and made the cleopatra
necklace, my daughter immediately latched on to it and wore it
for her senior graduation picures. she was also slightly upset
with the photographer, he asked more questions about the necklace
than her!

the cleo collar can also be made in the 28 ga wire…but the
thing to remember most is the wire with stretch…so make it a
bit smaller than you need for a close fit. if i can answer any
questions, yell them out. pat moses-caudel

Don’t know if this has been posted or not. You might try
looking for a “Textile Techniques in Metal”, a book by Arline
Fisch. There is a new second edition available.

Does anyone know a hobbyist who does a nice job of crocheting fine
silver into bola cords? I am well aware of the professionals like
Arline Fisch. I am looking for a hobbyist.

thanks, cathy

In March I took 4 hours of lessons for crochet wire from P J
Bettmann in Quartzsite. She gives individual and group lessons and
does the crochet wire for jewelry pieces. Her work was excellent.
I have not contacted her since March so I assume she is still at the
same address and e-mail. She was planning on staying in Quartzsite
all summer. P J Batemann, PO Box 2107, Quartzsite, AZ 85346

I teach crocheting with wire and just returned from teaching a week
long class at Touchstone School for Crafts. Where are you located
and I can see if I am going to be teaching in your area.
