Collet stone setting

Hi there, I’m quite new to jewellery making and am after a bit of advice for a personal project. I was wondering how to fix a stone into a 17 degree collet without doing it as a rub over. I’d like to have a slightly thicker surround (maybe 2mm) that the stone sits in. I’m not sure the surround is quite thick enough to treat it as a gypsy setting but pressing in the edges could ruin the look.

Also, is it crazy to set diamond in silver? I’m planning to do this as my own engagement ring using some inherited diamonds but can’t currently afford gold. I don’t mind if it needs redoing at some point but just want to check that it’s not a terrible idea for some reason I haven’t thought of! Many thanks, Jenny

Hi,

here are some videos to wet your whistle

research using bezel blocks…

here is a good video on stone setting techniques…the concept is the same for bezel (think one big prong), 4 prong, 6 prong…

also try searching this forum, and youtube, for

“how to” and collet, solitaire, claw setting, basket setting, …also, observe the words used in the titles, and search those as well…
