Circle punch cutter to make sanding discs

saw this tip for using a paper punch/ cutter to make sanding discs…kinda genius! thought i would share!

That’s neat! I see Amazon has this kind of hole punch in multiple sizes ranging in diameter from 1" up to 2.5". They aren’t expensive, so I plan to get one and give it a try.

My only concern is how long it will remain sharp enough to remain useful. Cutting holes in sandpaper can’t be good for the cutting edge.

How long has yours lasted?

Your local big box home store likely carries pipe like this.

I cut a bevel on one end in my lathe to create a cutting edge and refined it with a file. The lathe isn’t strictly necessary, it just saved me a lot of time.

I use a heavy hammer to whack out as many discs as I need in whatever grit required. I discovered I could stack several sheets of sandpaper and cut multiple discs in a single go. This home-made punch can easily be resharpened when it gets dull. I’ve been using it for nearly a decade and it’s still going strong…
