Anyone with experience doing chasing & repoussé on gold filled metal. Thoughts on gauge? Cautions and considerations?
Thanks,

Ruthanne, gold-clad has 5% by weight of karat gold. If the cladding is on both sides then there’s just 2.5% by weight on each side.
If the metal is thicker, then the cladding will be too. 5% of 12 ga. will be thicker than 5% of 30 ga.
So if you are going to chase & repoussé gold-clad you will have less chance of breaking through the gold cladding if it is on just one side, and if the gauge is heavy.
Neil…Thanks! I am following this discussion too…Rob
I’m a little apprehensive about citing the following thread, not wanting to stir things up, especially when I have no experience on the subject, but…it is a discussion with interesting points.
I remembered a post by Leonid Surpin who mentioned his working as a monumental sculptor doing repousse on building-size works in aluminum. It is about half way down in the thread. The relevant detail was the need to not introduce any cracks in the work which would serve as an attack point for weathering. A similar issue would apply to gold-clad in that breaking through the gold cladding would allow tarnishing of the base metal to surface.
It is also good, if sad, to re-read posts by some members who are no longer with us. Anyway, I hope this might be of some use, and perhaps new discussion of some of the points mentioned might be helpful.
I have repoussed on14K and 22K bi metal with good success. 14K is hard enough that the silver backing smashes after pushing the gold only a small amount. 22K worked like a charm, and has a deep yellow color that 14K doesn’t. Not gold fill, but similar.
