Casting equipment on a budget

I am Looking at buying a casting unit, I have a limited budget and
hopefully can pick up something second hand if this is appropriate
with this kind of kit. Does anyone have any advice on what to look
for or where I could buy one in the uk or does any one have one for
sale ! Thanks ness

I would suggest looking at estate sales. When I lived in Norway, I
picked up a bunch of lapidary equipment that way, and here in the
USA, I picked up an old, but great vacuum caster at an estate sale.
No one bought it the whole weekend, even though it said it
’worked’…so they kept dropping the price. By the time I bought
it, it was down to $75 for the platform and a very good, hi-vac
dental vacuum pump that was originally well over $1000 just for the
pump! I also got other equipment from that sale, including my wax
pot, polisher, jewelers bench and other goodies at a great price, so
it’s worth checking into. Don’t know how often such things come
available in the UK, but I know from years watching BBC
World/America, that buying second hand over there at markets or
auctions is fairly popular.

Richard… you casting machines are no good. They don’t last.
;-)… My Giant Lucas is only 34 years old and the chrome is
starting to come off of the arm! It has not been
abused…perhaps hit with a torch a few zillion times… AND… just
used near DAILY… casting five to six times a DAY for all those
years…!!! Ha!.. Sorry, just had to!

You build the best danged caster known to man!!! I have never even
replaced a spring… Probably a couple of dozen crucibles…but
never a mechanical part. Since you responded here, I just wanted to
take the opportunity and say THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFUL PIECE OF
EQUIPMENT!!!

Well Richard, I have owned a lot of equipment over the years and
just looking around the old Lucas Giant is the only major piece of
equipment that I still have that has been with me since Day One!. I
wish I knew just how many pieces it has cast. It misses spinning on
a few Sundays…but sure makes up for it the rest of the time. Many
times I’ll set the oven on Saturday night and get a start on the
week by casting Sunday afternoon or evening.

I told one of the guys in my shop that has been with me 13 years
that I dropped you a note. He too appreciates the caster… his
words were “When it’s gone, I am!” Ha! I’d be lost without either of
them. Thanks again for a great piece of equipment!!!
