Cast hinges

Hi Rick, please tell us about casting pieces with hinges and
latching mechanisms. Thanks!

Well this is some model work for a client who up opening a
jewelry shop here. The pieces are sort of a locket that needed a
latching mechanism. The concept is her’s, the prototypes were
sloppily (and poorly) done by a “famous” designer in NY. I
remained calm and held my tongue… (The client is adept in
drawing and design, and easy to work with)

I’m using a hook that pivots out and when closed engages with a
notched post. The hinges will be simple- 3 nuckles on each of 2
hinges. My caster has some creative mold makers- they like to
make multi piece molds- they’ve been casting for Stuben Glass for
25 years. I have options like a steel rod in the rubber mold to
align the hinge holes in the waxes. The other (NY) caster I use
would just throw it back at me…undone of course. Nice to work
with pro’s.

Hard to say no to an intriguing problem.

Rick, Are you willing to give out the name of your casting
company? I’ve been having alot of trouble with mine in RI.
Also, what is the minimum gauge of medal you recommend for a
model Thanks! Wendy Newman designer / goldsmith
