the rules for hallmarking gold and silver. Is a trademark necessary
when hallmarking?

I registered my Trade Mark in 2002. Rules may have changed since
then, but I registered it with the Canadian Intellectual Property
office. Cost was about $350. Registration lasts 15 yrs and then has
to be renewed. The process was very simple. You should be able to
find everything on the internet under CIPO.
The rules for quality marking are governed by the Precious Metals
Marking act. It basically says that if you apply a quality mark ie
10K, then it must be accompanied by a registered Canadian trademark.
