Burno Crucible Tongs

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that those tongs they sell
for two-part Burno crucibles are a piece of junk ? You’d need the
grip of a gorilla to hold the crucible together with those slippery
tongs whilst holding a torch with the other hand. I found that the
round handled clamp I use with a melting dish does a much better job
holding the Burno crucible together than those $ 3 tongs. I keep
having visions of 2000 degree metal burning through my boots.

Hmmm… may be I’ll invent a better pair of tongs. Won’t catch any
mice, but it’ll work, safely.

Brian, In order to keep all the parts of the Burno crucibles
together I wrap iron binding wire around the two parts of the
crucibles and wire the tongs to them firmly enough so that they are
all tight and cannot slip around.

I wrap a strong “band” of wire which when slid down the pair of
tongs toward the two-part crucible, locks the tongs closed. When I
want to release the crucible, I slide the wire wrap band back up the
handle and it springs back open. I also adjust the bend in the arms
to make sure the two loops sit flat against the crucible when the
pair of tongs is clamped down on it. But most of the time, I just
wire the tongs closed on the crucible and have a dedicated set for
every metal I alloy or pour.

It is just too dangerous to operate the burno crucible/tongs without
having them fixed and secure.

Yes, they are impossible to use. So the first thing I did was
re-shape them so they work. It only took maybe 10 minutes. They no
longer open and close-- they stay closed, but have enough spring for
me to slide the crucible in and out-- but they hold securely without
effort.

It is astonishing that such a totally non-functional item gets
mass-produced and sold!

Nope, they’re pretty much junk. I ended up making a sliding ring of
brass sheet to keep tension on the darned things. The one I have came
with my original set of sand casting gear. I ended up shifting to
melting dishes for my gravity casting. I do use it when I cast brass,
because the zinc blows out the rear vent instead of all over, so I
can aim it at the intake of the fume sucker.
