Buffer

I was recently “given” a heavy duty bench grinderwith a 1/2 inch threaded
shaft on each end. It is a 1/3 HP motor @3450 RPM. I have removed all
unecessary heavy hardware to make the unit somewhat portable.

My question is:
I want to use tapered spindles on the shaft so that buffs can be easily
changed. Do the set screws on the spindle go down into the threaded shaft or
are there tapered spindles that go on to the shaft using threads? I have
seen the spindles in various supply catalogs for about $5. and all seem to
attach with set screws. I have looked at Tim McCreight handbook!

Any suggestions on using this “gift” grinder? What buffs should I buy to get
going?

Thanks,
Bob B

Hi Bob,

Some guys have all the luck (bg).

Do the set screws on the spindle go down into the threaded shaft
or are there tapered spindles that go on to the shaft using
threads?

You should be able to find tapered spindles that are threaded to
fit the shaft of your buffer. Using the spindles made for
unthreaded shafts probably would work for a while, but after a
little use the threads would

become worn due to vibration & the spindles would develope more
vibration & be hard to keep tight.

Good luck finding the threaded spindles.

Rio should have threaded spindles for both right and left sides,
I’m sure= most other dealers would have it too
