Books that are recommended for ring making

I was wondering if I could please hear some book recommendations on
traditional ring making. Particularly ones that explain techniques
for forged rings, making linings, rails.

Any books start from billet, to rolling mill, and so on?

I am self taught so far and had some fun making a few rings using an
ignot mold to make my ring blanks and then used the gesswein ring
blank ruler to size them up. I really enjoyed forming the simple
rings like this.

I am now considering to “stet it up” and buy a rolling mill and make
my own from thicker billets. I also want to attempt to make rails,
and ring liners

However, unless I see someone else use a rolling mill, or read a
guide, I don’t know exactly how to start. billet sizes to start with?

Thanks!

Please forgive my ignorance, but what are “Rails” and "linings."
These are terms I have never heard before as applied to rings. That
is what I love about Orchid. I am always learning new things. Alma

I can recommend my DVDs, which are exactly what you are looking for.
The first DVD “Eternity Ring” starts from billet phase. In
subsequent DVDs I skipped that step. In all DVDs I emphasize what
happens after metal was through rolling mills. The reason is simply
that on rolling mills and their use is plentiful. I did
not want to waste my time on what is easily available, and I have
decided to concentrate on things which to my knowledge were never
documented before.

I didn’t catch this post yesterday… I flipped through one of Alan
Revere’s books so long ago that I forget - Likely it was
“Professional Goldsmithing”, I guess. He got into some of that
stufff. Certainly deeper than most jewelry making books of general
interest.

It’s a good place to start, and it will cost you about $13.50 for a
used copy.
