Someone has asked me to recommend a book for learning about jewelry
design. The only one I could think of off the top of my head was the
new Design Language by Tim McCreight; the one with pictures.
They want strictly design, and most books seem to be technique
focused.
Here is a book about jewelry design that I really love. It
encourages an “art jewelry” approach to jewelry design, not an
industrial or commercially-focused approach. Although I am trying to
make small-production, affordable, wearable, and, hopefully saleable
jewelry, I often return to this book for inspiration. It offers
practical advice about creating source notebooks of ideas, making
paper, clay, or wire models, and it has many photographs of jewelry.
The Art of Jewelry Design: From Idea to Reality (Jewelry Crafts) by
Elizabeth Olver
To be good at jewelry design = lots of time, study, work, etc.
I don’t think there is any “book” that could teach (enable someone
to learn) jewelry design, or any other true art form. It all take a
great deal of work and time to be able to do most anything well.
Sooo, I don’t think there is “a” book that could be recommended. Lots
of books coming at the issue from many different directions, so that
after some good deal of time and trial, a person MIGHT be able to get
an idea as to THEIR direction of design and technique.
