Black gold casting?

Does anyone out there do black gold casting? Also does black gold
actually look black like oxidized silver would or does it require a
coating?

Thanks,
hb

If you are referring to the Argen or similar alloy then the black
color is a coating of oxide. The alloy itself is not black.

I played, briefly, with the Argen black 18K alloy. We’d hoped it
would be good for a black gold background to pave set diamonds. No
such luck. The black is not developed chemically, but rather, by
heating the clean metal in air, without flux or fire coat, to a dull
red heat. Too hot for unprotected diamonds or gems to withstand, so
at least as far as I can see, it’s got somewhat limited uses. Plus,
the black surface color didn’t seem to be all that durable once
applied. Black Rhodium plating works better for such uses, though
the color is not as deep a black…
