Bad Checks

You know, weirdly enough I have never had a bad check.

Among my better friends who do shows they havn’t either…or
when they have, they have been promptly reimbursed. If I worked
in gold or with precious stones I would be alot more worried, but
I don’t.

Is this normal? Do most of you who do shows have problems?

Karen,

No, I don’t. I work exclusively in gold, do art shows and
festivals, have taken only 2 bad checks (from friends) and was
promptly reimbursed for them with cash. No customer has ever
stiffed me with a bad check, or credit card. (knock on head
(which is wood on occassion)). :o)

You know, I’ve never had but one either, in seven or eight
years. My friends and I laugh about the “diamond test”. Look at
their hands- If they are wearing a whopper diamond, we figure
it’s a good check…

Hi Karen,

In 16 years of shows I’ve never had a bad check over $20. Some
of the little checks bounce - but they’re more trouble to chase
than they’re worth.

The only problem that I’ve ever really had with a check was when
my partner and I accepted a post dated check. Seems that in the
eye of the law here in Virginia, if someone tells you that you
are getting a bad check then he is just promising to pay you at a
later date. No criminal prosecution. It is an extension of
credit. That leaves one with the option of going to civil court,
but can be a real collection problem. I still hold a check for
$2,300 from 1978. A good reminder. The party that wrote it died
with no estate to sue. A drug addict.

Karen, I’m going to “assume” that we’ve been lucky. I haven’t
had a bad one yet, either! That doesn’t mean it won’t happen!
