Another Scam

I recently received a strange e-mail from a proposed FBI person.
E-mail address Mail.fbi.gov. Note the “fbi” was not capitalized.

The e-mail contained the person name with address and phone number.
He requested I fill out a questionnaire which was in an attachment.
The e-mail disappeared after I clicked out of it. I did not delete
it.

Giving the person the benefit of doubt I sent a e-mail back saying,
“I do not open attachments from people I don’t know. If you are an
honest site send the questionnaire in the body of the e-mail.”

That was a month and a half ago. I received no reply.

Tonight there was a brief clip on the local news listing various
sited that might be scams. pay pal, fbi and others were on that list.

Lee,

If the FBI ever really wants to talk to you they will do it in person
 This is a recent scam, we have received tens of them in the past
few weeks also ones claiming to be from the CIA. Trash them,

Good point, Jim-- and quite true. But they do phone first. Years
ago, a “special agent” (apparently, there are no ordinary agents)
interviewed my husband (not as a suspect!) when they were looking
for the Unibomber. My husband called back to the FBI office, just to
make sure that the guy really was with the agency. The woman on the
phone assured him that he was. My husband said, “I’m supposed to
meet him. What does he look like?” The woman said, “Oh, he looks
quite ordinary!” And he did.

Nigerian Scam on Etsy.com

Just a quick post to warn any of you selling on etsy.com

Don’t accept checks drawn on the account of [Edit: Name removed],
CA. These are scam checks, the victim being the steel mill. I
received one for an etsy sale and called as the check was for over
600 bucks more than the sale, and talked to the business owner,
whose checking account has been compromised by checks printed at
Staples, or some office supply place and digitally signed. The
common thread in the scam was etsy. FBI and post office are now
involved, Interpol will probably be soon.

Don’t send goods, don’t cash the check if you get one, I was the
10th call he had gotten, more are sure to follow. (My check number
was 1066, the year of the Battle of Hastings)

Asking a vendor to take a check for more than the sale is probably
always a scam. A variation is letting you guess it isn’t legal but
offering to cut you in on the profit.
