fine silver can be work hardened also. Any pure metal or alloy is that is subject to repeated stress will harden…please see my posts above.
Just do it because even if you don’t understand why it is the thing to do.- metal changes when heated short answer and if not annealed things don’t fit as before

Also my way of holding things because I would love an engraving ball but can’t afford is double stick heavy duty carpet tape on a block of wood. I use thermoloc for some things but prefer the tape down plus lots of painters tape to mask details and bails etc. could also use steel bench block instead of wood.
I use a lot,of tape.
