I have recently encountered a stamp on some antique jewelry–RG
800 Silver. What does that mean?

I believe that 800 silver is 80.0% silver just as 925 silver is
92.5% silver or sterling silver.

The stamp is for a silver alloy known as coin silver. It is 80%
silver with 20% copper as the usual alloy. This was the coin
silver alloy used by the U.S…

800 silver means that the silver content is 800 parts silver out
of 1000 this is usually considered coin silver as most coins are
80%pure sterling is however 925 or 92.5% pure. this is also a
standard mark for most of Europe. i have also seen this system
used in some asian pieces and is used for gold as well as
silver. 14kt is 583, 18kt is 750, etc.

Actually, when I went to school, the term, coin silver, refered
to 90% silver.
