Tajbright

I am 50 years old, and fairly untraind in metal working, but not really new to the field. I have been making some jewelry since I took two begining classes at a Parks and Rec program in 2000. I made wire earings in the 70's for extrra spending money. My step-father was a lapidary and a silver smith and when he passed away in July of 200, I inheireted his tool, work bench an a large quantity of both cabachons and rough material. I am also a colored gemstone junkie ad am trying to learn gem identification. Searching the net, I found this site and I am hoping I can get some information that will help me better use the tools I have and improve my gem ID skills. I am particularly looking for informaation on how to test/use a prestolite torch. I have been using a Smith little torch, but in the cold climate of my shop, the small torch wont keep larger silver pieces warm enough for the solder to flow. Since I have a prestolite torch, and have new hoses for it, I am hoping someone can get me directions.
