Yellow tarnish on PURE silver

All the “fine” silver I have had has become tarnished-sometimes with
a pa le yellow/tan color that is generalized over the whole spool,
and sometim es I get areas that get black all over the place but not
on the entire pi ece. The fine silver that got the black areas was in
a plastic bag and I think it is probably from some moisture that
somehow gets trapped in ther e. I found that when I use a soft flame
torch to it, it disappears immedi ately. I notice the fine silver I
store with some kind of felt or another type absorbable cloth has
prevented it. About the yellow/tan color that is very subtle and
happens over time-could it be that there is just enoug h of another
metal in fine silver to cause this tarnish? If it was pure s ilver it
would be 1000 silver rather than 999 wouldn’t it? Just a thought
-believe me I have more to learn about the jewelry business than
anyone h ere… However-any health related issues you may throw my way
and I will g ladly give very informative researched answers. Thanks Anna

I must indeed live in a strange part of the world. I put all silver
things in plastic things to keep them from tarnishing I have things
that have been in these plastic baggies for a year or more and they
stay bright and shiny. It would be interesting to know exactly where
all of these different accounts live. But then, I haven’t had any
turn yellow or amber, just natural blackish. Ray

It’s mysterious. I live in Hawaii, and once had a cheap little
gothic dragon ring ($7 from a farmer’s market), sterling silver. The
thing never went black at all when I was wearing it, and I almost
never took it off for about three years…but it developed a
golden-pink sheen in the crevices, which seemed really strange to me.
Not bad-looking, actually, but still strange.

I gave it as a gift to someone (who promptly lost it, and I’m still
a bit grouchy about that), and now the replacement one I bought
myself just does the normal black bit…but barely at all. But it’s
not the same design, Chinese dragon instead of gothic, so it’s
possible this came from a different manufacturer? I wish I could find
that same design, but it’s been almost three years again and I’ve
been looking…

So I guess maybe the area might not have as much to do with it.
