[Workshop] Lewton-Brain Workshops Summer 2014

Lewton-Brain workshops Summer 2014

March

Ecole de Joaillerie de Montreal
Foldforming March 1-2 (Sat-Sun)
This workshop is an introduction to the system of folds in two days.

You will see how to make folds in each of the main categories. Forms
are derived from the natural plasticity and ductility of the metal.

Shaping is extremely efficient and rapid - many forms are complete
in three to seven minutes. Tools are simple: fingers, hammer, anvil
and mill.Complex relief forms are made from sheets of metal often in
one annealing. Forms made with this method resemble chased
constructed and soldered forms and can be made with most metals,
including steel.

Gold Applications Techniques:May 24-25 (Sat-Sun)

This approach lets you paint and design with different metal colors
onto background metals. The results of a two year research project
for the Society of North American goldsmiths. It includes fusion
applications (gold painting), doublee, Keum-boo, depletion gilding
description (tumbaga, guanin), inlay, overlay procedures and a
discussion of fire gilding. Control factors for free compositional
choice are defined and demonstrated. Many of the techniques work
well under enamels as given in a presentation to the 1993 Enamelist
Society Conference in Cincinnati. A great compositional system. In
these days of expensive gold this is a way of using scrap gold
jewellery you wouldn’t use for anything else to create gold images,
fast and easy, and then you build with them. Lots of examples and
images of what you can do. 10am-5pm

Lewton-Brain Concentration: 6 days, June 21-26

This is a rare opportunity to have a long interaction with Charles.

Because of additional and tangents that are part of the
way he gives workshops this is a deep interaction and chance to
learn.

Chasing Tools: Make Your Own: June 21-22 (Sat-Sun)

This intensive class teaches how to make chasing tools and what is
important to know about them. It teaches an in-depth understanding
of steel theory and control in tool making. All the kinds of chasing
tools are shown, which includes lining, forming, planishing,
veining, gadrooning, pattern, stamp making, chain and rope, matting
and texturing, soft and more. Chasing tools from other cultures are
described. Gold area inlay is shown. Hammer alterations are shown.
You should be able to make about eight or more chasing tools in this
workshop. Steel is supplied. 10am-5pm. This workshop is timed so you
can follow with the foldforming workshop. 6 soaked days
with Lewton-Brain.

August 9-10 (Saturday-Sunday)

This course is geared towards students who have experience with fold
forming, but want to take their work to the next level by exploring
more complex folds and realizing methods for integrating forms into
their artwork.Come learn from the master and creator of this
original metalsmithing technique.

Executing the intricate folds can be tricky. Charles will spend the
first day of class reviewing folds by student request. The afternoon
will be complemented with hands-on time to practice making samples
with instructor guidance.

Fold forming structures and surfaces are applicable for jewelry,
hollow ware, enameling, anodizing, and more. The focus of the second
day of class will be to understand how to go beyond the samples to
incorporate fold-forming concepts into finished work. Demonstrations
include edge treatments such as upset, rolled, rolled with a wire
inside, and decking; and reviewing approaches to looking at and
cutting up samples to make them more interesting. Students are
encouraged to bring examples of their work (finished or unfinished)
so that at lunch, time can be spent giving feedback that will help
generate ideas and methods for taking this technique to the next
step.

If there is strong interest, students will have the option of more
forming demos on the second day, as time allows.
