This fall, the Maryland Institute College of Art’s Jewelry Program is
offering an exciting opportunity to participate in an intensive
workshop with acclaimed jeweler, Thomas Mann. “Idea to Object:
Jewelry” was designed and created to give participants an opportunity
to learn the essence of creating a piece of jewelry, taking it from
conception to the market place. This workshop will be taught in an
unconventional format that will help participants learn the reality
of working in today’s market while expanding their ability to work
with a team, design for success and produce their pieces with
efficiency, quality and affordability.
While the format of the workshop will be structured in the form of a
competition, students will benefit from the guidance and support of
hands on lectures, demonstrations and critiques throughout the
process.
Participants will be divided into four teams of five, with each
participant assigned a role in of one of the following designations.
shop manager, design coordinator, pricing coordinator, marketing
director or graphic designer. Together, each teem will have 4.5 days
to design and prototype a jewelry object, produce it in multiples,
price and then present their collection to a panel of Jurors who will
select a “winning” design.
The workshop is open by application only. All who are interested are
encouraged to apply, as we are selecting participants with a range
of skill and experience, from beginner to seasoned artist or
designer. Students should submit their applications for review no
later than October 10th to the Division of Continuing Studies,1300 W.
Mount Royal Ave., Baltimore, MD, 21217.
