I recently finished tumbling two pieces of rutilated quartz having put no thought into what to do with them. I didn’t want to cut them up into smaller cabochons because the rutiles break through and leave little divots. They also look very nice as they are. I think that I would like to have at least one wire wrapped in gold filled wire so that it can be hung from a heavy chain. We will likely give it to our grand daughter when she graduates from The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) this spring. So, I am looking for a wire wrapper in the Central NY area who might want to take this task on. If anyone reading this post is interested, let me know. Following is a link to a picture of the finished pieces. Thanks…Rob
These are easy to set - and show off the rutile much better than covering with wire wrap. Could I help??
Judy…I agree. I just don’t want to invest in the gold needed to do it and I have never worked with gold filled. I have made many frames out of sterling silver with tabs and or post for freeform stones that, as you suggest, minimize how much of the stone is covered. If you have ideas, I would love to hear them. Thanks…Rob
Dare I say it, you could also wrap it in copper
Patty
It could be done with copper, but the rutiles are gold in color. Jewelers brass is a possibity and I may make a frame in brass just to see how it might look if I used gold filled wire or even gold. I love working in 14KY gold, but I need someone to pay for it. Thanks…Rob
What about Keum boo?
Pam
oohh yes! keum boo base…textured …with little gold prongs!

I would like it to be open so that light can come through. I have just drilled a hole in the top of freeforms like this before and added a simple pearl bail…Rob
Rob,
I have a sheet or two of brass from Rio. I can cut you a strip.

I have some nugold bezel. It’s pretty easy to work if you want to give it a try - holler and when I have your address I’ll send it along. What width do you need? judy@judyhoch.com
