Hi all, Here in the Northern Illinois, USA region, we have the
Chicago Metal Arts Guild. We are preparing our workshop schedule
for next year and I thought I’d ask here –

What workshops do you wish a guild in your area would offer?

OR

What is the best workshop you’ve ever taken?

My @ cents, John Cogswell teaching anything is the greatest… He has
a terrific following, wait list for every class he teaches. He is wonderful!!!

One of the more successful and useful programs I’ve planned was
aimed at the hobbiest->small business guild member The Internal
Revenue Service provided an instructor, and materials at no cost and
covered topics about small business definitions, deductibility of
expenses for the hobbiest, record keeping, steering clear of trouble
and inviting trouble with tax issues lively discussions followed
First of all, I was incred ibly impressed with the presentation, and
the staff at IRS for being so cooperative Mostly though, the
feedback from the attendees indicated t he need for this type of
program was dead on, and a sequel was requested

Elaine, I have to agree that Andy Cooperman gives one of the most
useful and entertaining workshops I have ever taken. I have also
heard that Chris Hentz (creator of Chris’s Cables) gives an awesome
workshop and I would make the trip in for that one.

Connie, You are dead on with this one. I introuduced a Business
weekend workshop at Metalwerx last year and am glad to have Sam
Patania teaching one in Feb. We typically have a tax expert and
lawyer to discuss copyright, consignment contracts and quality
trademark law. The second day is photography and marketing.

Knowledge is power.

Elaine, We just had our guild meeting and decided to do 5 workshops
this year. There was a lot of excitement about a photography
workshop so that will be first (Feb.-Mar), but there was equal
excitement for a hand engraving workshop. We’re going to try to
have a 4 or 5 day workshop on this so we can lure some professionals
in our area to come, too. Now we have to schedule it. These were
two of the workshops I was most interested in as well.

In case anyone missed the notice in the Fripps thread about Chris’s
workshop coming up at Arrowmont, yes, make the trip, he’s definitely
awesome.
