What type of setting to choose

Hello everyone,

My question is probably amateur but i can’t figure it out on my own.

In jewelry i see in 2 main types of stone settings - bezel and
prong. At first i was under impression that cheaper type of jewelry
is using prong setting, then i see H.Stern using it. It is probably
personal preference, design need and technical decision what type to
use. I just wonder if there are basic rules what type of setting to
choose.

Prongs or bezel can be used on cabs or faceted stones or things. I
use prongs or cut out the back if I want light to come through. The
prong will let the stone show more of it beauty. It also depends on
style of the piece and personal preference.
