Tube-setting a chipped diamond

Hi Everyone, I’ve seen some postings on re-tipping chipped diamonds,
but didn’t see anything about tube-settings. A customer wants a
piece incorporating her grandmother’s diamond, but it has one large
chip on the side, as well as a couple of small chips. If I try to
set it in a tube-setting, will I demolish it? I usually don’t work
with diamonds, so am unsure. Thanks. I don’t post very much, but I
love this forum!

We set broken diamonds in bezels all the time and have no problem
with it (as a matter of fact we often recommend it to customers as a
safer way of setting broken diamonds since once it’s set the diamond
is much better protected). The only problem we have found is that if
the chip is too big the bezel may not end up being round looking.
You should warn the customer of this.
