Tube bending

By the way I grew up on a farm so I have a question for you. How
do you find the time to make jewelry with all those animals to care
for?

Well for one, I don’t have regular hours as I wholesale my work,
work for myself and everything is mostly one of a kind. These days, I
make less, out of more expensive materials, and charge more. What its
worth actually. But how do I do it…? Hey…why do you think I had
a kid? Free labor! He’s 20 now…still lives at home while he’s in
college. We split the chores. He hates the goats, but loves the rest
of the brood. Plus, its one feeding in the morning, one in the
evening, and the clean up isn’t bad at all. Seems like your parents
had the same idea ;-). I guess we have entered an era where daily
chores seem unusual and taxing. I like being busy. However, people
do ask me all the time how I can be 50 years old and weigh only 100
lbs…lol.

I always thought we were to put those darn springs on the OUTSIDE
of the tubing, to aid in bending.

Kay…it is easiest to put the spring on the outside. Having said
that, if you cannot come up with the size of spring for the job, you
can put the spring inside and bend also. Usually its a bit harder to
get the two separated. Another alternative is to wrap the outside
with soft binding wire and bend.

Depending on the severity of the bend, salt, sand, wax, water, etc.
will be MUCH easier to remove than wire.

Hi Kay,

I always thought we were to put those darn springs on the OUTSIDE
of the tubing, to aid in bending.

That’s typically the way it’s done, on the outside. However that’s
not to say someone can’t use them on the inside. Different strokes
for different folks.

We have added tube holding pliers… to hold tubing gently but tight
enough to use for cutting, filing, and doing other operations. Item

Hi, Andy,

I went to the Stuller site and searched every which way, but could
not find these pliers. Are they too new to be on line? Could you
post a picture of them?

rosenthal in miami has them and cheaper than other
suppliers…rjisintl.com excellent source for…just about everything
including hard to find items and generally lower prices than all
other dealers most jewelers use…i’m never sure why more people don’t
mention the company…they have been around for many years…and have
excellent terms and services too…you can get the largest selection
of pattern rollers in one place for really reasonable prices, and
their drawing dies are only 8 bucks apiece…(round only)!

Not everything (presuming you have found some things) are cheaper
here.

Example: MINI DRAW BENCH $670.00 Each (www.rjsintl.com no extra ‘i’)
whereas: Drawbench Table Top Model Made In USA $295.00 ottofrei.com
product #4994

and I like the looks of the Otto Frei one better… point is to
always shop around if looking for best value for your dollar, if not
then simply go with a place you know and trust. Main point is the
correction in address, however.
