Torch melting for casting

hi i need a new torch for my casting operations the one i was using is to big i am using acetylene and oxygen i am not melting a lot of metal maybe 5 to 8 oz for a tabletop caster does anyone have a torch brand they like for casting and what gases they use also what type of crucible thank you

I use a Meco midget with a Paige casting tip, however, I rarely melt more than three ounces of metal. My crucibles are smaller ceramics on a whip handle. You might stick with your larger torch, possibly converting to propane and O2. Another suggestion is to look into electromelt furnaces with graphite crucibles. Good luck…Rob

I use a Smith Little Torch with propane, O2, and a Paige Melting Tip. I don’t do very large melts, never more than two ounces. I am much less concerned about how quickly the metal is brought up to temp, only that it is. But I am not casting jewelry as a rule but recycling clean sterling scrap into sheet. I don’t know if there are different requirements based on the type of casting you are doing. Lately I use that Paige tip more for annealing than melting scrap.

At that size of melt, you’re getting beyond the range of torch melting. It’s time to invest in a small furnace or melting pot.

8 oz is a fairly large amount. If you oxyacetylene torch works, stick with it, if you don’t use it too often, buying another piece of equipment costs money. If you find it too big and cast often, rmeixner’s suggestion is a good one.
