Have you ever danced with a Scarecrow in a Corn Field while the
Field Mice Fiddled? Or played Leap- Frog with Thinny Twigs while
crows cackled and rolled and ate the furrowed seeded gardens clean?
Well ... if'n you have or if'n you haven't ... you surely now know
that the reason the Scarecrow is ineffectual is two fold. First ...
he's busy rompin' while the farmer ain't in sight. And second ...
there ain't no animal so dumb as we'd like to think they are ... so
dumb that they'd be fooled by an old jacket stuffed with straw and
buttons jammed in front of its head for eyes.
And yet ... and yet dear souls ... there ain't hardly no figure
around that's as ubiquitous as Mr. Scarecrow. This is a Universal
figure folks. I'm willin' to bet that when we start colonizing the
planets ... first one we land on is going to have a Scareman
(Intergalactic cousin by marriage to the Scarecrow) on it ... a
skinny jacketed figure with alien straw stuffed up his sleeves and
buttons for eyes designed to keep humans off the planet. We will see
it ... and we will laugh ... and wonder at the utter stupidity of
the denizens of this new planet who had the simplicity to think a
Scareman would frighten us away.
Scarecrow lore is found in America ... in the United Kingdom ... in
Europe ... and in other countries of this green Earth. They have
been recorded throughout history. They were protagonists in movies
and writings. Anybody ever hear of the Wizard of Oz? Shakespeare
used a Scarecrow as an image ... as did Huxley. Scarecrows have
been around since the dawn of silent movies. Before that even. Ahh
... but there is one most amazing aspect of scarecrows I would
venture to guess very few know. And it is this:
No one ... I mean no body ... no person ... no living historian ...
nary a soul in fact ... knows the origin of the Scarecrow. From
whence did he spring/ this scraggly thing ... was he born was he
made/ was he formed was he laid? Did a child one day look out of his
or her window and say ... mommie mommie ... look ... there's a
scarecrow. Was that the beginning?
No matter me lads and lassies. For once upon a time ... certainly
not too long ago if we measure time by the elapsed moments since
this earth came into existence ... once upon a time a jeweler made a
Scarecrow for Van Cleef and Arpels. Pretty little thing. A brooch.
Yellow gold bod and chrysoprase head ... and diamond and sapphires
and rubies. Go take a look. He's a cute little fella.
For those of you who are new to this thing called Tidbits...may I
direct you to my home page at www.tyler-adam.com

And there ya have it.
That's it for this week folks.
