[Tidbits] The Football

The year: Unknown.
The Place: Wyoming
The Quarter: I think the fourth.
The story: True

A quarterback turns to the referee and asks: "Haven’t we got a
5-yard penalty on this? He then takes the ball from his center and
begins to carefully step off the yardage. Both teams are watching.
The quarterback does not stop pacing off until he reaches the end
zone 71 yards later. He scores a touchdown. The fans are screaming
with joy. The opposing team is stunned. This is unbelievable. The
touchdown provides the margin of victory of 20-13 for Green River
High School against Evanston High School. Phil Summers … the
quarterback … is a hero. His coach states later in the day that
Summers had plagued him all season to try the play … but the coach
never thought it would work. Sometimes all it takes to lead the pack
is a big pair of nerves … this for those of you who didn’t know
nerves came in pairs.

Once upon a time in recent years there was a football team called
the N.Y. Jets. A quick addendum folks. I know nothing about
football. We’re talking zero … zip … nada. I had to call a
friend who knows everything there is to know about football to
explain the play I described above … which he did with more than a
suppressed chuckle here and there as he patiently pandered to my
abysmal ignorance. Hey … you know this … I know that … and
that’s what makes the world go round. So … back to the N.Y. Jets.
Once upon a time an unknown jeweler made a beautiful gold football
brooch. It was set with calibr=E9-cut emeralds inserted between gold
wire stitching. The football had two diamond set bands and baguette
lettering spelling out NY JETS. The total diamond weight was 2.25
carats. It’s worth was around $8,000

Alas … this tale does not make for a long and comprehensive
dissertation on either football or jewelry. On the other hand … it
does subscribe to the credo that less is often more. And so … in
that spirit … like Cyrano … I end the refrain.

For those of you who are new to this thing called Tidbits…may I
direct you to my home page at where you will

And there ya have it. That’s it for this week folks. Catch you all
