[Tidbits] Bulldog

How many different meanings to the word folks? How many different
depictions? Well … there is of course Bulldog Drummond …
fictional detective … originally a Captain in the British Army …
very famous in his time. And then there’s the animal … short,
pugnacious looking fellow of English breeding … primarily raised
for baiting bulls. And from this chap we get words like
“bulldoggedness” for obstinacy … for that time when bulldogs would
seize a bull’s horns and twist till the creature fell to the
ground. And perhaps “bulldog edition” which stands for the earliest
edition of a newspaper … though I have no clue as to how that
meaning came into being. And then of course–last but not
least–there’s “Rhinestone Bulldog” … a moniker used to depict a
piece of jewelry … a moniker coined by Rhinestone Tyler–famous
coiner of monikers … not to be confused with a lady of similar
name.

Portraiture has existed since the beginning of recorded history.
Cavemen began the whole thing on their walls when they had nothing
to do because their wives had headaches. There were not many varied
means of expression back then–when one wasn’t fighting for one’s
mere existence–hence wall etchings. And … harkening back again
to the days of idle times amongst our cave dwellers … pictures of
animals were not only apparently preferred …they also predominated
most themes.

We have not changed much since then. Our methodology has improved
… but our preferences remain the same. We love pictures of our
loved ones. Makes no difference if it’s an etching … or a snapshot
… or a portrait … or a piece of jewelry. Makes no difference if
it’s of a woman … or of a man … or of a pet. And so we have our
Bulldog … made of Rhinestones and red cabochon glass eyes. Oh what
a magnificent creature our nameless poochie is.

He was created in the heyday of costume jewelry … manufactured
here in the United States sometime in the 1930’s by an unknown …
and presently resides in what I think is a private collection in
Italy. Go take a look at it. Walk around it. Admire it from all
angles. Breathe in the form … the creativity … the style … the
fashion … the manner …the mode … don’t stop me folks … I’m
on a roll. Watch out!
