g’day all I claimed in this forum a while back, wrongly , that
the use of the word “enamel” to describe paints and similar materials
was a relatively recent phenomenon originating within the automotive
industry. Some years ago Mr Woodrow Carpenter of Thompson Enamel Co
did what I should have done and researched the etymology of the word
- exhaustively. The resulting article, printed originally in Glass on
Metal, is reprinted in the July Issue of eNAMEL Online Newsletter -
for the masochists out there it is also available for download from
the website as a Word document, which runs to 5 closely-typed
double-column pages of Arial 10 font.
