The value of charm?

To Barbara et al,

I used product called "Panther Pee" to discourage deer. Nothing to
do with panthers of course but it was wolf urine. How it is
captured is anyone's guess.

Although this truly isn’t about making jewelry, I can’t help
responding. My very new Jetta Sportwagen was invaded by a rodent who
has eaten insulation under the hood in the back of the engine. And
everything I try to plant is immediately devoured by deer.

However, why would I want to use bobcat, coyote, or mt. lion (aka
panther) pee to scare away those animals? When I take my dog out for
a walk, she’s more attracted to dog urine scent locations than to
anything else. So, it follows (to me) that if I were to use this
method of repelling rodents and deer, I’m going to attract the
larger predators to my house. Indeed, they do live in the greater
area, and I don’t want them nearby my house.

Andrew, As I am fond of telling my students: “If you want it to look
like it was done by a computer, have it done by a computer. If you
want it to look handmade, make it by hand.” My bet is that those
rings show more soul than a truck load of mass produced bands.

I never had a problem with “larger predators” in our house other
than the two legged kind. And alas Panther Pee didn’t work for them.
But it did work to keep the deer away from the plants, but not the
garden - they would still come and lie down in the salal. And my dogs
(I had 6) were not attracted to the plants either.

the year.

Hi Mark. Thanks for the encouragement.

I do have a tabletop 4-axis CNC milling machine, but I don’t use it
to create jewelry at all. I use it only for making tools and fixtures
to make jewelry with.

....everything I try to plant is immediately devoured by deer.

Yeah, Barbara – I have the same problem (a herd of 9 deer was
grazing in our back yard this morning), but the foul-smelling spray
does work, regardless of its contents (and the smell doesn’t last
that long, for humans). The analogy of your dog and dog urine is not
applicable here.

All the best,

Why’s that? A mill like that is great for creating jewelry, either
by carving, cutting out or engraving metals and other materials, by
creating wax models for lost-wax casting, or by using it to create
patterns and molds to shape various materials. Is this a prohibition
you adopted upon listening to people tell you that it’s wrong to use
machines like this to make jewelry?

A quick update on the ground black pepper and cayenne pepper on
tulips. So far, no deer nibbling. In case a recent rain washed off
the pepper, I reapplied. I saw deer tracks in the flower bed, so I
think that means they were there and did not bother the tulips. I’m
feeling more confident that there will be flowers.

Judy in Kansas, where some houseplants have been moved outside. but
not too many in case I have to cover them for a frost.

I had the same problem with my vegetable garden, too. Then I read
that deer don’t like to be confined in small spaces, so will not
jump between twoclosely placed fences. I put 1/2 inch ply tape up on
portable step in posts 4 feet in from the fence, and haven’t had any
problems with the deer since. You can get both at Tractor Supply.
It’s meant to be electrified, to contain horses (or whatever). But
it doesn’t have to be electrified to keep the deer out You might do
just as well by tying string betweenposts in the ground.

Where it’s forecast to be 90 today, but our last frost was only 2
weeks ago. How do you plan a vegetable garden around such extremes
in temperature?

Judy, cayenne pepper is the best thing ever for varmint nibbling! We
mix it with vaseline to coat bird feeder poles, and staple heavy
plastic around the trunks of fruit trees and give that a good
coating. One time is all it takes for a marauding squirrel to realize
he really doesn’t want those peaches.

Yes. I want to learn to make jewelry in the classical manner. I’ve
therefore decided to remain an amateur who will mostly be making
gifts for family.

Judy,

Try Nichols gardens, I think they are in Oregon. It;s been years
since i ordered from them. They specialize in all sorts of obscure
herbs and such. On their website they go into detail about different
herbs and some of which will repel animals. I can’t remember what the
herbs were, but If i had stayed where i could grow a garden I would
have gotten the herbs.

Here in Fl. I have avoided growing anything but orchids. After i
took a broom to a gator I think I will leave the yard to that
critter.

I’m meaner than you. I mix the cayenne with Vicks vapor rub.
Incredible! The birds do not taste/fell it. The squirrels do and hate
me for it.

Today I hate squirrels. One kicked the plug of the freezer out of
the wall in the garage. I spent a good few hours toting what is now
garbage to the pick-up spot. Huge packages of cayenne pepper are in
my line of sight now.
