if one has 24K gold plated one side of a piece of 16 ga. sterling silver
and wishes to attach a pin back without disturbing the plating on the
front, would a sparkie welder do the trick? anyone actually done this?

A Sparkie fusion welder is just the ticket for this type of job, but
fusing sterling findings to sterling is tricky. You need the booster pack
for added power as well. Last year we did a series of etched pieces with
epoxy enamel color and fusion welded the findings. Some of the pinbacks
had to be redone.
