[Source] Larger Delft Casting rings?

#1

I’ve been thinking about trying Delft Clay casting for a project, but
the largest outside mold rings that I can find are the 4" size, and
my project is larger than that. Does anyone know if a source of a
larger size? Alternately, has anyone on Orchid had luck with making
their own mold for containing the Delft clay?

Thanks in advance,
Lindsay

Some students of mine made wooden molds, just ran them up quickly in
the woodworking room at the school where I was teaching.

Also I went to a local engineer and commissioned some bigger rings,
made from mild steel tubing. It’s not rocket sciece for these
fellows.

I mean science.

Hi Lindsay:

I machined up a pair years ago that were about 6" diameter. Just two
cut sections of heavy wall aluminum pipe. Turn a tongue into one,
and a step into the other, and away you go. I did use a boring bar to
turn a little undercut into the inner wall, so the clay had
something to hang onto to keep it in the rings. Pictures available if
you need.

I don’t see why you couldn’t use a small standard sandcasting cope &
drag setup. Delft clay is just very fine casting sand.

For whatever that all’s worth.
Brian.
