Soldering Problem

My concern is with applying a new bezel cup replacement, heating
from the backside(underneath)I must contend with the appliques
being painted with the flame and becoming unsoldered,

Hello John;

My take on this is that you are risking opening a whole can of worms
by applying heat to this article. If it were possible, and I were in
your position, I would consider grinding away the remains of the old
bezel and fabricating a new one only using a heavier than usual guage
of metal as a bottom on the new bezel, say 16 guage. Then attach it
in place using 2 or more rivits made of heavy guage sterling wire,
say 14 guage. Countersink the hole where the rivit head goes and
countersink the end where it gets upset. Then file the head and
upset end flush with the surface and finally, set the stone.

I want to sincerely thank everyone for the many helpful ideas so
generously shared with me. You all are not only the best of the
best, but also the most generous, always ready and anxious to help.My
brother purchased this buckle at the Santa Fe Indian market,so it was
quite expensive, and very important to try and save it for him.I’ll
let you know if I win or lose this one.Best wishes to all, John

There is a paste type plumbers ‘heat sink’ product that works great
in tight situation sorry cant recall the name .and have non on
hand… but you could coat the entire buckle and replace the
bezel…Have been close to the situation with buckles… Very
difficult to get enough heat to the spot without heating the entire
buckle… had a ring with coral inlay… jeweler burned the coral to
black with just a sizing! Jim

Jim Best to have that laser welded to avoid any damage to it. I have
worked on heavy buckles and badges in the past with a torch and if
there is any detail or enamel it burn off much less trying to
restore the finish back to original.

If you want to send it to me I will be happy to weld that in place
for you.

Treating my pallions of solder with boric acid and alcohol? I have
never heard of that before. What method do you use to treat it?

Thanks for everyone’s replies so far. I had assumed my answer but it
helps to hear it from other people.
