Sketching design from magazines

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for all the help with previous requests -
I am writing individually to those who sent such excellent advice! I
have a dilemma. A friend has wedding rings (with diamond) and would
like them to be reworked. She has given me an image that she cut out
of an in-flight magazine (well, as good as) and it is only possible
to see the top of this piece. What I am looking for is advice on how
to picture the rest. I realise this sounds ultra-stoopid. I also
realise that given she has no idea of what the side or under-view of
the ring is, it doesn’t matter that I don’t. But I am dying to find
a way. Finally, I don’t want ot post the pic, because obviously the
design belongs to someone. It is not our intention to reproduce this
and market it as our own, she just wants the rings remade into this
design.

Suggestions? Onslaughts? Ethical views?

Hello ZZ -)

Finally, I don't want ot post the pic, because obviously the design
belongs to someone. It is not our intention to reproduce this and
market it as our own, she just wants the rings remade into this
design."

If you’re looking into making this ring then you are already
reproducing somebody’s design. It doesn’t matter how many times you
are making it, does it?

Understand that I’m not judging anybody and if you want to do this
job then it is al up to you.

I can only give you a slight idea of what the feeling is when you
see “your” design made by somebody else. Yes I know, small add-ons
already changes a design and makes it different as the original one.
I’ve seen reproduction of my designs made by jewelleres who own their
big fancy store with nice spotslights and big advertisements
“Everything handmade” and “We design our own”. In some way it is a
nice feeling to know that your design is a quality product and profs
are reproducing “your work”. Bottomline is, that “they” are saving
the trouble of using their brains and use yours to make the cash.

I know that this is a difficult position for you because you try to
help out a friend of yours.

May I copy your work without asking?

Again, don’t feel offendet but think about this twice and think how
you whould respond. Feel free to do what you want to do, it’s your
call. I don’t want to give you a bad feeling, it is just a matter of
respect and being respected. No disrespect to anybody!

Let the customer (your friend) make the decission of how the picture
should look like. Everybody has some imagination ready to be used!

Honnestly, I do not have a way to help you out just by the
of a look from a top view of an item other then using
your imagination.

Have fun and enjoy
Pedro

Zee,

You are the designer and the client does not have an idea of the full
ring. Make something which looks good for your eye. One of the
requirements of the job, just don’t flinch too much or show doubt
when presenting the design/ring  After all you are the
professional in this transaction, act like it.

Sometime a fun occupation we have.
