hi jerry,

i used to do all my own refining via aqua regea and then
precipitating the gold and silver. i have a very rudimentary
understanding of that process and made it work very
satisfactorily, but was concerned about all the caustic stuff i
was using. i read all the claims made by shor in their
advertising and talked to a few people who owned the shor unit.
i asked them if they reccomend buying one, and they all said no!
they are all bench jewelers, like me, who want to process bench
sweeps. the shor unit is next to useless (!) on this type of
material. you REALLY have to eliminate all oxides for it to work
at all. one must use a LOT of ammonia chloride (toxic!) to get
the gold clean enough. if your gold is not oxidised and you know
the karat why refine it ? it does work on gold purchased for
scrap, metal that is purchased clean.

i know all this because i didn’t heed my fellow jewelers advice,
i bought one. it was one of my worst purchases and the biggest
waste of time i’ve subjected myself too. if you want ot play
with one, i will send you my unit and the (probably table) salt
it needs,(other ‘special chemicals’ only available from shor you
will need to purchase) FREE if you pay for shipping and my wifes
time to ship it. this offer is to you first, if anyone else
would like to take the offer and jerry doesn’t want it, please
e-mail me directly.

i let the honest professionals do my refining now, they send me
24k back in three days.

best regards,

Jerry, The Shor refining system works well. The only complaint I
had about it was when we recieved it, the ceramic filter arrived
cracked…We called Shor and had a hard time convincing the
people there that we didn’t break it. We used to use the aqua
regia acid method to break the gold down with and sulfur dioxide
to precipitate. I’m sure glad to get away from all those
chemicals. The Shor system is much safer! The one draw back of
it is; the final pure gold is only .995 pure versus .999 we got
with acids. Also, the chemicals are a bit pricey. Regards, Ken

I have it and find that it is fine for refining gold. Any
platinum tends to contaminate the melt. Makes things a little
difficult. Talk to Peter Shor. He has a solution. Personally, I
have given up on the Shor system for the time being. I do way too
much platinum to keep the sweeps that clean.

Dear George, Who are the *HONEST* professional refiners?

hi duane,

usual disclaimer: no affiliation. david h. fell hasn’t always
been polite and the most knowledgeable, but they have always
treated me very honestly. one time there was a discrepancy as to
the weight i sent and the weight recorded on the their receipt.
i called them about it and they asked me to describe how (what
form) i sent it. i had sent three separate bars in a box but not
bagged. one of the bars fell in the packing rubbish below
unnoticed until clean-up. they had no idea whom it belonged to
until i called. evrything was resolved nicely. i’ve never
experience a short return form them, and they get it back to you
VERY quickly.

it’s ironic that our industry as a whole, when dealing amongst
themselves can sometimes work on a handshake and trust, but from
the outside we are regarded barely above a used car dealer. and
how we love to malign the refiner. i’ve had my share of short
returns and hustles (that’s usually the impetus to refine in
house) before i got wise to them. a key to not get taken is know
what you have. i feel the majority of large refiners a re
honest, and i know that professional wrestling isn’t real.
